Valve: Game Crashes and Overlay problems caused by Anti-Virus Software (9-27-07)

From http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...d.php?t=603579

Game Crashes and Overlay problems caused by Anti-Virus Software (9-27-07)
Recently there have been some issues with Source engine games and certain Anti-Virus applications. These issues can cause game crashes and prevent the Steam Community overlay from functioning.

- AVG 7.5 and NOD32 have both been confirmed to cause crashes with Source engine games. Here are some examples of the symptoms you will see as a result of this issue:

1) A warning message telling you to reduce your screen resolution
2) A error message about failing to lock the vertex buffer
3) The game hanging with steam.exe at 100% utilization (or 50% utilization on a dual core, or 25% utilization on a quad core).
4) A hang while connecting to servers

If you are running either of these Anti-Virus programs then they need to be fully uninstalled.

- Kaspersky anti-virus can prevent the in-game overlay from working correctly. Kaspersky has provided a work-around that can be found here:

http://supportwiki.steampowered.com/...m_is_malicious

Please be aware that we are working with these companies to improve these issues.

As always, we suggest closing as many background applications as possible while you are using Steam. This includes Anti-Virus and Security related programs. For more information, please see:

Disabling Background Applications

unfortunately for me I do use AVG but with that being said I can't believe that Valve actually posted a statement telling people to turn off antivirus and security applications you have got to be kidding me.

LOL.

Imagine if it was something like a new HD tv.
"Disable the lock on your doors and windows, and any other security measures while you watch our HD tv."

Hope this gets solve fairly quick.

I have to shut the gmail notifier off for this same reason if it helps anyone out. Sometimes you'll get horrible FPS and alt tabbed if you get a few emails at once. Doesn't happen often but just a heads up.

Amazingly, these are two free programs.

I wonder if they are going to debut Steam Anti Virus or something for the low low price of $19.95. And for only $5 more, you get Peggle Extreme and Counter Strike Source! d:

If any of you decide this IS a big enough problem to uninstall that certain AV, there are other free options, namely avast! antivirus, found here.

Man that kinda sucks that you hafta uninstall it. That kinda sucks because you'll have no protection then.

Is Avast! as good as AVG? Because I have heard other people having problems with Avast! with other gaming.

NOD32 isn't free. I run it and have no problems with Source. AVG is crap, period.

Oh, I thought Nod32 was free. Hm.

I do not know where you get that "AVG is crap" assessment. I have been using it for years with no problems, and it has won awards and junk. d:

I've been using AVG for quite some time. Used both the free and pay version and have had no problems. For me the kicker for the switch to AVG was when I ran symantec on a system (knowing that some kinda virus was on it) and it came back clean. Same system 2 min later AVG cleaned the virus off. So I can't agree with the "AVG is crap" statement.

the problem is valve cant get their act together, blaming symptoms (avg/nod) rather than addressing the cause (steam) is a copout, though a way to give an explanation for the abundance of crashing before they (hopefully) fix it eventually

i use avg free, only time it crashes is ofter on quitting game, not during. though ive didsabled steam ingame community

Every anti-virus has won an award at some point. AVG is bad there are worse but that doesn't make AVG good in comparison.

http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Now keep in mind thats the rating for AVG Pro, the one you pay for.

Looking at the review for AVG it doesn't show AVG as being a bad product, just indicates that it problably isn't for the less technical people. It got excellent marks for updates and for finding and cleaning viruses.

If you don't want to uninstall AVG, shut down the following items listed under PROCESSES in the Windows Task Manager.
avgamsvr.exe (alert manager)
avgcc.exe (control center)
avgupsvc.exe (update service)
avgemc.exe (email scanner)
