I actually really liked signs as well. I have to say, I've yet to see a M. Knight movie I haven't enjoyed.

The village imo was amazing.

Most of the characters in his movies behave and speak like they're semi-retarded and semi-drugged (I didn't see the Village, though). I don't know if he's just bad at motivating actors, but they honestly seem kinda bored. The 6th Sense was kinda dull, but it had a great payoff. His other movies? Not so much.

Unbreakable...
Heh, Mr. Glass. If there's a person who is so very fragile there simply must be another who is super-powered enough to survive a train wreck. Yeah, that's logical...
The premise of Unbreakable - everyday superhero - was pretty good, but that last scene just ruined it.

Signs...
Advanced alien race defeated by earth's pathogens? Maaaaybe...
Advanced alien race defeated by water? Oh come on...
And the girl leaving glasses of water around the house: Welcome to Convenient Plot Device 101.

"It felt wrong not to swing." Dude! You're dumb!

the cool things about signs is that the story was not about the aliens..it was about the relationships between the characters and their own problems..

the girl with the water was not a device for the end...all of their little quirks - the kid having athsma, the girl leaving water around, gibson leaving the priesthood, his wife dying, merril leaving baseball were meant to show the interconnectiveness of things and how they happen for a reason - even if i dont agree with that

i agreed 100% with this review..

Then he shouldn't have picked such a stupid premise. Have, I don't know, maybe an earthquate throw them together - something less distracting than ALIENS! How about mutant land worms? (Tremors, heh)
Even without the aliens, though, the characters were unlikeable and dull. I was cheering for them to get vaporised by the aliens.

You're right, it wasn't just the girl. All the characters were transparent plot devices for Nighty to get his dumb message across
Things do happen for a reason. But not because someone wrote a dumb script

FT's link made some pretty good points. That movie was pretty funny, especially when you hear the news announcer "several middle eastern countries have found an effective way of battling the creatures, but are unwilling to share it"

That is quite obvious now that i look, why else would they run around in a hostile environment naked?

ug...AGAIN, the alien thing was not what the movie was about: it was a device to expoler the characters further.

When I go to see a movie about an alien invasion I want an alien invasion with big fights, not some semi emo togetherness crap.

That's what I came away from the commercial with.

It doesn't exactly scream familiy bonding.

The movie blew, stop trying to defend it by saying it's about something else.

well, i would disagree considering there has been more praise than knocks from people who's job it is to see movies and have more of a ref. point than either of us.

I use to joke around with a ex co-worker of mine about why some people hated the village. We came to the conclusion that because it lacked the *pachoo* *pachoo* sound effect of laser weapons, explosions, and special effects it was disliked.

Honestly I think M. Knights films are more intelectual than alot of movies these days. Maybe the general public is too dumb to appreciate them? I'm not saying posters here are, but I know someone who works in a video store as a clerk, and people do tend to rent the most absurd, god awfully dumb movies available.

I think M. Knight brings back an old style of movie making similar to Alfred Hitchcock. It's not about what you see to entertain you, it's more about what you don't see, and that let's your imagination run rampant. That's really a big part of signs, and the village.

It's great how people will defend M. Night's movies as "Oh, it's an INTELLECTUAL movie", thus, if you didn't like it/thought it was transparent, you're OBVIOUSLY a retard.

The ideas are shit, the excecution is shit, it's just not good filmmaking. Just because there is background information doesn't make it a) an incredibly intellectual film or b) good. End of story.

lol...

i liked the sixth sense and signs, but haven't really cared for the other films shyamalan has done.

and puppychow is pretty much spot on. signs--to those people who actually think about movies after they see them--really wasn't about aliens. to me, the ideas were interesting, the execution was interesting, and it was pretty solid and interesting filmmaking. if you didn't like that it didn't have big explosions and such, then hey, that's your perogative. god forbid people have different opinions in regard to entertainment mediums!
