Walmart - A study in numbers.
Did you know that wal-mart could give every full time employee a 2.5$ per hour raise and still make money?
Walmart made over 12 billion dollars profit last year. Walmart has over 2 million full time employees. Could give every single full time employee an extra $6,000 dollar check per year and still make money. Scary. Last edited by MyNameIsChuck; 09-19-2007 at 05:49 AM. |

They pretty much have a monopoly and force many local American businesses OUT of business by requiring unreasonable cutbacks. They also do not allow their employees to unionize. Remember, at Wal-mart, the stockholders matter!
Scary.

A corporation's goal is maximize profit, not minimize it.
Do you want to know why your argument is completely bunk? It's because if they paid each of their 2,000,000 full-time employees $6,000 more per year, their profit would be $0. That's something their shareholders would be happy with, I'm sure. And actually, their profits are at 11.3B with 1.9M employees, many of which I assume are only part-time.

The whole idea here is for the company to make the money, if they have 2M or so employees being paid at the rate they are, why raise their income any more then they have to? As long as they are staying within the states minimum wage policy, they are fine.

Walmart is retail, retailers don't pay their employees that much. Walmart is no different.
I was at Circuit City and all of us rarely got any raises and were constistantly required to work longer and harder without getting raises. Shortly after I quit they lower their pay cap and asked anyone who was over it to take the new, lower pay or leave. It hit big news a while back. The goal of any company is to maximize profit, and minimize cost. The goal of any employee is to maximize payout and minimize effort. An equilibrium is met. People wouldn't work at Walmart if they thought they were getting a raw deal, they would go someplace else. They offer cheap benefits and money to people willing to stand around for 8 hours a day and essentially do nothing but take crap from ignorant customers. It's not pretty, but it's not evil or malicious either. |

Fun Things to Do at Wal-Mart
Fun things to do Wal-Mart while the spouse or significant other is taking her sweet time!
1. Set all the alarm clocks to go off at ten minute intervals throughout the day. 2. Make a trail of orange juice on the floor, leading to the restrooms. 3. Greet customers at the front door with "Welcome to Sprawl-Mart" and tell them everything is buy one get one free today. 4. Move "Caution: Wet Floor" signs to carpeted areas. 5. When someone asks if you need help, begin to cry and ask, "Why won't you people just leave me alone?" 6. Take up an entire aisle in Toys by setting up a full scale battlefield with G. I. Joes vs. the X-Men. 7. While handling guns in the hunting department, suddenly ask the clerk if he knows where the anti-depressants are. 8. Switch the men's and women's signs on the doors of the restroom. 9. Dart around suspiciously while humming the theme from "Mission Impossible." 10. Set up a "Valet Parking" sign in front of the store 11. Hide in the clothing racks and when people browse through, say things like "pick me! pick me!!" 12. When an announcement comes over the loudspeaker, assume the fetal position and scream, "No, no! It's those voices again!" 13. If the store has a food court, buy a soft drink; explain that you don't get out much, and ask if they can put a little umbrella in it. 14. Go into the dressing room and yell real loud..."Hey, we're out of toilet paper in here!" 15. Put one pack of M&M's on layaway. 16. Walk up to an employee and tell him in an official tone, "I think we've got a Code 3 in housewares," and see what happens. 17. Get boxes of condoms and randomly put them in people's carts when they don't realize it. |

It's true that retailers don't pay much and treat their employees like shit. I used to work at Target and that was one of the shittiest jobs I had. (Except for the time I worked at Chuck E. Cheese, but that's a whole 'nother story.)
I happened to luck out and I work at a grocery store (Schnuck's) with a strong union (Local 881) And I'm guaranteed pay raises after working for a certain number of hours. Lots of protection from being wrongfully unemployed as well. Sure, they take a few bucks out of my paycheck but it's my strong belief that it's well worth it. Penn & Teller did something on that. I'm quite sure the Unions would LOVE to get their hands on Wal-Mart, as all the combined dues would equal more money. I agree with the idea behind a union, but not the way they're being used for exploitation.

There is a reason wal-mart opposes unions, and let me tell you, it isn't because of unions exploiting members. It is because of money. |

There's no place better than Walmart for grabbing some kids 12-14 fleece sweats at 10 PM on a sunday because your son needs them for PE on monday.
Watch for falling prices!

Unloading trucks at Walmart was a god awful job for me, but no one who works in an hourly retail position should actually expect a career, so I can't fault them for their wages.

*yawn* and yet I don't see anybody bitching about low prices. You also won't see people who can't find employment otherwise but want to work complaining about actually having a job--and guess where they shop to make their dollar go further? You only get one guess and if you get it wrong you get deported.
