Sing while you can? Lost in translation or is that a popular phrase in Russia? I like that they can redo the voice and make the mouth sync. Same with HL2, I believe. That's awesome!

yeah the HL2 engine stressed facial expressions completely i remember one video a long time ago had the gman talk in slovakian, then chinese or something, and the sync was almost exact. it was badass.

wow, they had the mouth animation so good in Half Life 2...I forgot that. Why are they bragging about it in TF2 again?

Because TF2's engine does it real-time. In HL2 the NPCs had their sentences pre-synched and played that animation, if I recall correctly.

Apparently in TF2 you could throw any sound at them and the engine not only figures out the lip-synch, but can adjust their expression to match alongside it.

Does that apply to voice chat too?

Not sure if voice chat applies to it or not. I know all of the taunts match the model. When you do a taunt or get hit the player actually shows physical pain or pleasure. Snipers smile and say things a lot when they get more than a few kills. Kind of neat to watch.

And spies comment if you pull off a really good backstab. "You got blood on my suit!"

"I made quite a mess..."

i dont find this fascinating hl1 had this over-the-microphone support, it just looked funny when somebody would use one of those sound-clip programs and would start playing music over the microphone or when peoples mic's craped out, it was pritty spooky ... but if you think about it , its pointless- less then 2% of the game you actually are close up enough to even see facial details let alone watch and listen to some 7year old blab about how his day at school was and make googly noises and talk with a voice that has not yet met puberty

I don't know if it works with voice chat, haven't tried it.

Barron, HL1's was little more than a volume-dependent mouth opener. You talked like a Nutcracker. That hardly compares to what they're doing with TF2.

'Talking' is a loose description of how crude it looked. It always reminded me of fish gasping for air.
