Alright, so first let me begin by stating, ok, I guess its my fault for not reading the fine print. Now to begin. I today purchased a PS3 40GB model. With the intention of saving money over the 60GB model at 499$. So I get home, I play a bit of GT5. Alright now im done with that.

Then I get the idea, hey let me play some of my favorite final fantasy titles from PS2. So, I put the disk in, and nothing. So after I took a few other PS2 games to see if they worked, nothing. Ok so now I am thinking somethings wrong. At this point I am assuming the laser is messed up. So before I jump to conclusions I do a little googling. This is what I found:

The PS3 40GB model does not have Backwards Compatability with PS2 games. However the 20GB 60GB and 80GB models do. That makes no sense whatsoever that the low end console 20GB has it but not the 40GB. Keeping in mind the 20GB model was temporary, but STILL. What the FUCK! I have no intention of trading up to the 60 GB model because my PS2 is still in working order. I just bought it today, and im happy with it so far, I just cant believe they dont offer B/C. I also read its because they removed a graphics chip.

Now to what I know... Xbox360 Emulates Xbox original titles. The PC can play N64 games, PS2 games, PS1 games, all of the below as well. I do not believe the chip is needed entirely. They can do it using emulation firmware.

Nukem I think what Sony did was stupid. If you buy a PS3 you should have access to the emulation regardless of which version you purchased. I am not, however, a part of the market for which they are crafting their product though...and it may be that reason. It just feels like one more way companies like Sony seem to screw their customers...regardless of whether it's intentional or not...

yeah dude... i thought that was common knowledge. ive got the 40gig too, but i keep the ps2 hooked up in case i want to play any of those games. of course, i have yet to play anything on my ps2 since i got the ps3, but im sure when god of war 3 has a nearing release date, that will change. till then, the ps2 will probably just gather dust.

The PS3 does a shitty job emulating a PS2 anyways.
Sony probably removed it from the 40gb model because they originally had a full PS2 chip-set in the PS3 for emulation and removing it would reduce cost.

That said, why the hell would you get a PS3?
There's like 3 games for it.

Compared to what? 360 has a terrible lineup of games as well, as does the Wii. This gen is truly a test of futility. At least with the PS3 you have the best video experience possible in a format that, to be honest, is insanely awesome.

Actualy. Satuurn emulation is in a pretty decent state right now. Many commercial games can be run, and some at full screen.

Now, Not that I don't sympathize or anything of the sort. It's just that is one of the basics I would expect one to look into providing the thought of playing through some old PS2 games would have popped up.

Well I mean that was the big thing when they announced the ps3. backwards compatability. and since in not a fanboy of any sort i never even kept up on the news of gaming. i never even heard it thru forums or anything. so one would default to the understanding the ps3 is backwards compatable.

"the big thing" was not backwards compatibility when it came out. Bluray and high def games were the key parts of it. Next gen as many people refer to it. You can try to make those observations, but from my perspective, it just looks like you are trying to blame someone other than yourself for making the mistake of buying a cheaper version and not reading the fine print.
