Port TFC maps

Why they didnt port more TFC maps to FF?
or is a port taking alot time more them making a map.

If its not why they didnt port Turkeyburger, flagrun, rock2 for example

and looks exactly like a "TFC" map, i havent played it so i dont know how optimized it is, but uh, yea, porting is crap and produces crap maps.

Apparently not. 2mesa3 is one of the most played maps in #ff.pickup, and it gets FPS beyond your wildest dreams.

yea that 2mesa3 i must say does own...very smooth fps...does look a little like TFC but honestly who cares cuz its not TFC its FF so there ya have it ok awesome peace

yea, you're getting the wrong definition of porting. A thoughtful skilled mapper knows that he'll need to redo just about every single brush - so it is technically not a direct port with just entities and texturing. You have to do every single brush for an optimized port. 2mesa3 owns and I like the TFC look - and hundreds will agree with me.

It's not... that was my point. "Redoing it" usually means taking advantage of the source engine, which takes far longer than redoing the simple (usually grid-aligned, consistently sized) geometry from a TFC map. Source geometry is much more advanced, as is lighting and texturing.

Indeed. If I remember right, openfire_sh4x was made in 4 hours. ff_openfire, on the other hand, took far longer.

Porting is easier than making a new map, but if you want to make it look better than a TFC map you have to put in a lot more work. At that point you might as well start from scratch and have a really good-looking level. Most mappers don't want to release anything but their best, and that goes double for the FF team.

If there's a case where you just want to be able to play a certain level, porting is best. I'm surprised we haven't seen more direct ports than we have, frankly.

I think everyone's saying the same thing :S

IMO ports are terrible anyways. Remakes ftw! Not everything should be exactly the same as the tfc map, since a bunch of things like jump pads, run speeds, pyro usefullness, etc, have changed from tfc to ff

Just curious, but what ports are you using to make that judgment? As far as I know, there are only 2 direct ports in circulation (openfire_sh4x and 2mesa3_classic [and dev_2fort but that map was never meant to be released]).

FWIW, I like the new version of Crossover in FF. The split paths in the middle reduces midfield DM'ing dramatically. I will say, though, I do miss the dettable wall and the water access.

I love the look of 2mesa3. Plain simple and smooth. Not saying all maps should be that way, but it's nice to have a few maps like this.

yea, Squeek, allow me to explain a lil more what i meant.

2mesa3(or whatever) is very nice looking from the SS's i've seen(havent played)it), its plain and simple and that exactly how i like maps but thats just me, but on the same hand "Source" has SOOOOO much more to offer the mappers that we'd almost be ignorant not to take advantage of it. do a direct port(brushwork) then step back and look at each section and modify it in a way that says your proud of your work.

i am not bashing 2mesa3, just explaining why i dont like "most" ports, and how i feel about them being ported.

i'm not re-reading this so if ya'll cant understand what i mean i'm sorry, i've been up for......a lil more than 30 hours at the hospital with my sister, i'm starting to hallucinate, lol...

I wasn't directing that question to you (as seen by the quote of Mr. Happy). And, I wasn't questioning the looks of ports. Looks aren't terribly important. I was questioning how Mr. Happy has judged all ports as "terrible" gameplay-wise, when there are really only 2 ports in circulation. Also, I very much doubt he has played either (clanstyle).

I'm not trying to be defensive of MY map specifically (I thought 2m3_classic was awful the first pickup I played on it, and was ready to forget about it ever being played again), but of ports in general. I strongly encourage more people to pump out some _classic versions of maps. They take very little time if you know what you're doing and they CAN come out very well in the gameplay department. I'd have pumped out 5-6 _classic versions by now if I didn't need to get training done.

Mostly, I want to see more maps being made instead of the 3-4 month long mapping adventures that mostly end in abandoned maps.
