FIXED: First attempt at mapping

So I know I said I was making a conc map, but for kicks I decided to try and make a fortress. This was made today in about an hour. I have only worked with valve hammer a few times before this so I am quite the newb. Its not much but I want to know what you guys think about the architecture and the texture placement. Then from there I will move on and make it bigger and add the inner works.

i think it looks good man. good use of the textures and simple but nice design so far. i think it'll look good with like a dark sky and "night time" lighting.

Good idea, I need practice with lighting anyway. I will be making the fortress larger soon.

I just got FF set up for mapping... I looked at a couple of vmfs that were kindly donated by a good friend (thanks GambiT!). I create a new file, and... nothing. I have no idea what the fuck I am doing.

Where is a good place to start?

Do you have to create the entire thing in wireframe first and then texture it, or can you, say, create a box, texture it, create another box, texture it, etc.?

I think I might fare better if I just created a big box to put everything in so I have a floor and walls for a point of reference. (Of course, this ginormous box would be deleted before compiling... d; )

So yeah, where is a good place to start? I am lost in the blackness of Hammerspace. @_@

Well when you first goto file new, goto view->center 3d views on selection. Also goto view->autosize 4 views. Then I go under the current texture tab on the right hand of the screen and I click browse. I search in the filter box dev_measure. Then I start mapping. I usually drag out the blocks on the top down view (the top right black box ) then I use the side/front view to add height and what not. Also remember when the block tool is selected there is a box in the bottom right of the screen that says objects. You can change from block to cylinder and arch to make some curves. Pretty much just use interlopers and other sites and mess around, thats how I learned. You will figure things out as you go along like ctrl+f on a vertex splits it, and alt+e on a group of vertexs scales the object. Really just mess around and read tutorials. Good luck!

also to enlarge a section use "shift+z", you must click in the view you want to enlarge first.

quality, not quality my dear friend

from what hes shown us so far, he knows how to texture properly, scale properly, add lighting, arches, props, decals, and that "knows how to design that mutha" sorta skill

Yeah, what you have so far looks good, I'll agree with zero that there is a lot more that makes a map but proper texturing and brushwork is huge.

btw: I checked briefly that interlopers site and the spotlight map, de_forest, made me shit bricks, true story. The time that must have taken to compile... whatever, I'm depressed now.

actually im willing to bet that the compile time wasnt that bad, assuming that the brush work behind/underneath the displacements were done properly and neatly.
