FIXED: First attempt at mapping
So I know I said I was making a conc map, but for kicks I decided to try and make a fortress. This was made today in about an hour. I have only worked with valve hammer a few times before this so I am quite the newb. Its not much but I want to know what you guys think about the architecture and the texture placement. Then from there I will move on and make it bigger and add the inner works.

i think it looks good man. good use of the textures and simple but nice design so far. i think it'll look good with like a dark sky and "night time" lighting.

I just got FF set up for mapping... I looked at a couple of vmfs that were kindly donated by a good friend (thanks GambiT!). I create a new file, and... nothing. I have no idea what the fuck I am doing.
Where is a good place to start? Do you have to create the entire thing in wireframe first and then texture it, or can you, say, create a box, texture it, create another box, texture it, etc.? I think I might fare better if I just created a big box to put everything in so I have a floor and walls for a point of reference. (Of course, this ginormous box would be deleted before compiling... d; ) So yeah, where is a good place to start? I am lost in the blackness of Hammerspace. @_@

also to enlarge a section use "shift+z", you must click in the view you want to enlarge first.

Yeah, what you have so far looks good, I'll agree with zero that there is a lot more that makes a map but proper texturing and brushwork is huge.
btw: I checked briefly that interlopers site and the spotlight map, de_forest, made me shit bricks, true story. The time that must have taken to compile... whatever, I'm depressed now. |
