Unskilled and Unaware of It

This describes many internent posters, eh?

http://www.phule.net/mirrors/unskilled-and-unaware.html
Quote:
Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments

People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it.

What? You really have to be mentally retarded to not realise your own mistakes. Mostly people simply don't want to admit they were somehow wrong. Interesting story, but it doesn't really apply on most posters out there.

it sounds more like the stupider a person is, the less likely they are to see it.

Was waiting for you to post something in that general direction. Glad to see you lived up to my expectations.

English

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Stupider

I recently got into an argument with a friend at work over stupider not being a word. We found several dictionaries which proved otherwise. Sorry, but he's correct.

That's the big problem with English. It's a stupid language. The more of it you learn, the more confusing it gets. I feel sorry for people that have to learn it after coming from simpler languages (like the romance languages).

I don't mind it, though. Probably just used to it.

The biggest problem with English is that it keeps getting more and more retarded. I bet a few years ago you wouldn't have found stupider in the dictionary.

The English language, at this point, is marking the downfall of all civilisation. Example; The New Oxford Dictionary contains "bootylicious".

Does anyone else feel like we all just got knocked down a few notches?

I feel it.

And yeah, I feel bad for foreigners having to learn English. So much slang. So much laziness.

If something is actively giving you an addiction to it, it's addicting. Ta-da. Now shut up.

What's worse it that in the US you "write" someone rather than "write to" them. Grrr.

And guys: language evolves. We won't like it because it's changing after we've learned it. But it'll happen anyway. If it didn't we'd all still be speaking in Chaucerisms.

And swich a thing, God woot, noon desireth.

Oh yeah, Chaucer used the word woot. Perhaps we are regressing after all

the one that pisses me off most atm, is how a lot of english people have come to use 'of' instead of 'have'. it's as if they've never been told that 'should've' is a contraction of 'should have', and when they try to 'speak proper' as they say, they end up sounding retarded.
