No one knows what bhop is.

So I'm a stubborn ass hole and I keep getting mad when my friend chastises games for not having strafe jumping. I keep telling him these games don't need it because they have bhop. But his point is the game can have air control, but use strafe jumping for faster acceleration, and bhop for sharp corners and shit. Which makes sense and isn't all that bad, but I'm a stubborn asshole and I won't admit that.

So I set out to see if strafe jumping or bhoping garners faster acceleration in cpma, because I was dead set to show my friend strafe jumping is gay and will give you cancer.

What I found out is that nobody fucking knows what q1/sourcegame bhop is. I found a thread on the QL forums about the difference between the two, and it was an unholy painful to read. There was a lot of dumb shit thrown around in it. So I boot up cpma myself to find out.

Apparently I'm a fucking idiot, because, strafe jumping does accelerate you faster. Which makes sense I suppose. Determined that I was bad at cpma and getting false results I launched irc to talk to somebody who knew what they were talking about.

It was an annoying conversation, full of terms that have duel meanings depending on where you come from, that confirmed strafing is faster.

The thing is, in pretty much every game but q1/source games, bhop is a term used for "consecutive jumps" and most people don't hold the strafes and mouse movements to the term.

In conclusion, the internet's gay and so is strafe jumping.

seems you're trying to compare two things: strafe jumping and bunny hopping are different terms. to add to the cloudy bullshit: cpma is not a good comparison of vanilla 'strafe jumping' due to the different movement. a plain q3 comparison would probably help you make more sense of it. Here's the thing, jumping is only half of it, mousing a very specific way makes up for a lot of speed as well.

edit: err i misread: summary - quakeworld/cpma style - tons of aircontrol, with speed increase with mousing as well. q2/vq3/ql - classic strafe + forward while mousing a specific way to gain speed. sometimes incorrectly called bhopping because you're bhopping in teh process

goldsrc/source games - chain jumping in a certain timeframe to build up speed. its worth noting tho cs and css have circle strafing to build speed by mousing around tho im not familiar with the details but this guy has the angles perfect

My main point is that most people don't know what bunnyhopping pertains to in q1 and source games.

I've tried reading that article before, but I got lost in it. Maybe I was too high idk.

Also have seen that video before, good stuff.

I never bhopped back in the day but I strafe jumped all the time. I also find it interesting to see what other non-QWTF/TFC/SOurce/WTFBBQ FPS games support strafe jump...it's actually pretty common.

Yeah I've also been surprised by that. Cod or one of those silly realistic shooter games has strafe jumping in it, as well as some other weird physics kinda like trimping and what not.

Trimping is double jumping in the traditional sense. Silly FF devs with their silly names.

I think I've also seen some over bounce. Over bounce to the best of my knowledge is a q3 ql thing where you fall from a great height and if you jump correctly you can get that height back. You can see a lot of OB in that quake jump video I posted here a while ago.

overbounce is just falling from a certain height, its not like if you fall more than X units you will overbounce. that would be a lot of fun though .. the best ones are rebounce spots + overbounce (like dm6 jumppad wall)
