Strafe jumping is a technique whereby a player can increase their movement velocity by holding forward, a strafe key and then immediately jumping.  Holding forward and strafe simultaneously increases the player's velocity, while jumping preserves this velocity for the duration of the jump (while travelling more or less straight forwards).  Basically, the act of strafing adds an additional momentary velocity, while the lack of friction due to being airborne retains this extra speed for the duration of the jump.
