The Soldier is the second most heavily armored class in Fortress Forever. A retired army weapons specialist, the Soldier still carries his favorite weapons with him as mementos. The rocket launcher is his primary weapon; it's capable of holding four fast-firing rockets at a time. The Soldier is essential to base defense (both front-line and last-line). The rocket launcher's stopping power makes the Soldier an excellent close-quarters fighter; he does best in small hallway and areas where the enemy cannot easily dodge his attacks. Though he's weaker out in the open, the Soldier sports a pelletgun and super shotgun for ranged attacks. The Soldier's combination of weaponry, military training, and overall rough personality make him an excellent choice for the player who wants to frag lots of enemies and keep the base safe.

The Soldier (sometimes shortened to Solly) is the mobile artillery of TFC. Combining ample armor (second strongest behind the HWGuy) with high mobility and very effective weapons, this well-balanced class is both favored and resented.

The Soldier's primary weapon, the rocket launcher (RPG), packs a deadly explosive punch, but requires a degree of skill to use effectively. Since the rocket projectile takes time to arrive at its destination, fast-moving opponents can usually avoid a direct hit, especially at long range.

The most proven tactic is to get within short range and aim at the feet of the target, rather than directly at it, letting the radius damage of the explosive (termed "splash damage") do the work. This has the additional effect of "bouncing" the victim, sometimes knocking them off narrow walkways, and inhibiting their aim.

Skilled players utilize this advantage even further; by firing at the feet of their opponents with the right angle and timing, they can immobilize the opponent while inflicting damage. This can go on until the Soldier has to reload or the opponent is dead. This is especially devastating against Snipers, who cannot fire their main weapon without both feet on the ground.

This "splash" nature of the RPG provides another big advantage to the Soldiers, rocket jumping, allowing the normally slow moving class to cover ground very quickly, and reach areas otherwise inaccessible, at the cost of a self-inflicted loss of health and armor. As effective as the rocket launcher is, it can only carry four rockets at a time, which can be expended very quickly in a heated battle. A skilled player reloads early and often, (ideally between enemy encounters) and knows when to switch between the RPG launcher and the Soldier's second best friend: the super shotgun. While of limited use at longer ranges, at close range the so-called "super shotgun" is very deadly.

Another weapon unique to this class is the nail grenade, which, when thrown, releases a stream of nail-like shrapnel horizontally in a 360 degree radius, damaging all in its path before exploding. The Soldier can carry up to two of these, as well as a maximum of four frag grenades, the super shotgun, single-barreled shotgun and the crowbar.

Role Defense

Basic Strategy

  • The Soldier is a very versatile class. Use your Rocket Launcher to stop attackers, or to punch a hole in the enemy defense. Aim for the feet!
  • Use your Super Shotgun to finish off enemies if you don't have time to reload your Rocket Launcher.

Special Abilities

  • Quickswitch
Right clicking changes between super shotgun and RPG, so you can get a quick shotgun shot off while your enemy is in the air, then switch back to RPG to shoot the floor as they land. Remember to reload both weapons when you have a spare moment!

  • Rocket Jump
By firing a rocket and the ground and jumping simultaneously, the Soldier can rocket jump to great heights. This jump takes a fairly large amount of health off, so use sparingly (about a 5th)

Weapons

Crowbar

Crowbar

The standard-issue crowbar for every class. It does some damage, but not enough to make a difference in a battle against a full-health opponent. It's a good humiliation tool for someone who is about to die, however.

Pelletgun

Pelletgun

Pathetic damage, but it has a tight spread, so it's better than the Super Shotgun at long range.

Super Shotgun

Super Shotgun

The Soldier's secondary weapon. It packs a powerful punch against lighter classes.

Rocket Launcher

Grenades

Frag Grenade

Frag Grenade

The basic grenade: A lot of damage, large blast radius. The frag grenade is useful for taking out sentry guns, instakilling scouts or other weak opponents, and general destruction.

Laser Grenade

Laser Grenade

After the grenade countdown ends, it jumps up and begins spinning. While spinning, it will fire powerful short-range lasers. After the lasers expire, the grenade disappears without exploding.
